San'a Institute for the Arabic Language (SIAL) is located in the Old City of Sana'a, Yemen on Sa’ilah Street. The school specializes in teaching Arabic as a foreign language.[1]
SIAL also teaches courses in Arabic calligraphy, Islamic studies, and Yemeni culture.[2]
SIAL is in a beautiful old house in the Tabariya neighborhood of Old Sana'a. At first, the school attracted many U.S. and British students, but Al-Qaeda’s attack on the American destroyer Cole and 9/11 led to there being “very few Americans or Europeans.” Most of the students are from India, Pakistan, Indonesia and Malaysia, and many students are not Muslim.[3]
The founder and director of SIAL is Muhammad Al-Anasi. Before founding SIAL in 1995, he studied English at Reading University in the mid-1980s,[4] and was the Arabic Language Program Coordinator for the U.S. Peace Corps/Yemen.[5]
